Do you have a novel that you have been working on and want to refine, or have you started writing a novel and don’t how to move it forward?
“The First Five Pages and Beyond” writing workshop will cover the importance of effective beginnings, including structure, rhythm, pacing, and texture, with an emphasis on finding your story through exploring voice, viewpoint, and characterization.
Mini-lectures on the art of the novel, the intuitive creative process, and conventional vs. non-conventional approaches to novel structure will also be covered.
Knowing how and where to begin, not to mention how to continue a manuscript of novel length, can be daunting. You will be provided with guidance, including group and instructor feedback during class and through written notes. We will briefly cover the more elusive, finer sensibilities of depth, meaning, theme, and nuance of emotional ties that pull the reader in and continue to resonate long after the story has ended.
*Please note: You will need to have written the first 5 pages in order to participate in class.
Limited to 10 participants. Registered participants will receive more details of workshop format and preparations for our time together.
About novelist Deborah Reed:
DEBORAH REED is the author of seven novels, most recently Pale Morning Light with Violet Swan, and The Days When Birds Come Back, both published with Mariner, now an imprint of Harper Collins. Her novel, Things We Set On Fire, sold over 100,000 copies in the first six months, and another, Carry Yourself Back To Me, was an Amazon Editors’ Pick of the Year. Her eighth novel, Mobile Creatures, will be published April 20th, 2027.
She has taught novel writing at the Hellenic American University in Athens, Greece, the UCLA extension program in Los Angeles, and was previously the co-director of the Black Forest Writing Seminars at Albert-Ludwig University in Freiburg, Germany. Until June of 2022, she was the owner of Cloud & Leaf Bookstore in Manzanita, Oregon. She now lives in Berlin.
