Come spend the afternoon playing with words. In this generative workshop, we'll play individually and collaboratively with the practice of florilegia, creating personal, conversational art that begins as a seed we discover in the words of others.
Florilegia is a practice of reading and pondering, of conversing with literature by pulling out the phrases that “sparkle"— removing them from their original context and arranging them (like flowers) in a new one. In this fresh context they ask questions, spark ideas, create unexpected beauties or conundrums. All of these are doorways into poetry.
We'll learn how to look for phrases that sparkle, and explore—through conversation, visual art, and writing—how these resonate with the world, our own hearts, and each other. We'll spark found poems, original poems, visual thinking, and ideas to take home.
Poetry of the Sparkling Phrase offers newer writers a gentle and intuitive doorway into poetry, and invites seasoned poets to a fresh and playful practice.
Please bring:
(1) a book that's personally meaningful, which will be accessible to the group
(2) a completed or in-progress journal or creative notebook (which will remain private to you)
(3) a camera if you have one (your mobile phone is fine).
All other materials will be provided.

Tara K. Shepersky lives and writes on the north Oregon coast. Her two illustrated poetry collections are Tell the Turning (2021) and Serpentine (2023). Poems and essays have appeared in Orion, The Christian Century, BioScience, and many other magazines and journals.
